Short Film Tips + Be Consistent
Find a good script. Doesn't everyone agree that when you watch a movie with a lousy script it's depressing. Scripts help make a fantastic movie. Look at Shawshank Redemption, fantastic script! Once you have a great script you're up and running. Next, think about the money you want to spend? Think about how to raise it or self finance it depending on the project. Either way you need to budget. Without the budget you will either over spend or never finish the project.
Once you are ready to pull the trigger, get the actors, locations, and music ,all signed to clearances. Eventhough this is so basic you would be surprised how many filmmakers just jump in once they secure all of the crew. This is so important because once you're in post, and we know how long that takes, actors move and good luck trying to find them. This could really be a death wish for your project. So, get it signed!
Have you ever been to a movie with lousy sound? I have a guess what? I'm so distracted and brought out of the movie that I lose interest in the movie. If you are going to invest in something, make it the sound, you'll tell me later this was the best tip you've ever received.
Hello Dolly! That means limit, if not eliminate the zoom. When in doubt push in!
The day is coming to an end so I hope you followed the sun. Yes the sun! It can be your best friend or worst enemy. You better time your shots and scenes appropriately or the shadows will ruin your film. The sun moves quickly that is why I prefer to shoot inside where I have control over the light. I don't like the light controlling me.
Finally, my words of wisdom and motivation for the day, be Consistent! That means, get up and do something related to filmmaking everyday! Even if you shoot stuff on your cell phone, watch extras at the end of a DVD, or read Blogs from Indiefilms. Be Consistent, get out there and happy filming!
